Founded on April 20, 1938, the Alice Rotary Club celebrated 75 years of

placing "Service Above Self" on Saturday, April 20, 2013

The Rotary Club of Alice celebrated 75 years in the community on Saturday April 20, 2013, at the home of Rotary Club President, Roger Hoffman.

Members and their spouses joined in their celebration which they named celebration ‘Fiesta 75’.

“Our motto is ‘Service Above Self’ and that’s what this club is all about,” Hoffman said.

The club is well known for giving out scholarships to students and sending them to leadership camps where they learn to become better leaders.

Hoffman said the club has an ongoing program to donate books to the library, and, supports numerous community causes and activities. Among them

are scouting, the County Fair, Habitat for Humanity, and District Grants that have gone to support such local causes as making improvements to The

West Alice Youth Center. The club also  participates in an Adoption Awareness Picnic which strives to place older children in loving homes.

Probably the single most favorite event of the year is the Christmas party where they invite four students from each of Alice's six elementary schools to

join the club's luncheon for a great meal and a visit with Santa Claus. Each member is assigned one child and is responsible for buying gifts such as video

games, bicycles, dolls and  sporting goods. "In many cases, these may be the only Christmas gifts these kids would receive," Hoffman said.

Hoffman has been president of the club for the past year and said it felt good and was really special to celebrate the club's 75th anniversary.

“It’s been a rewarding experience. When you have been blessed and do good things for those who are less fortunate, it makes you feel good about yourself,” Hoffman said.

The club meets every Wednesday at noon at the Alice Country Club. An individual must be invited to join the club but Hoffman said they only

need to contact any current member to show their interest in joining. The club will then discuss extending an invitation.
